SUMMER COLLEGE - PREP PROGRAMS

  • Brown Summer High School - This is an educational program for students entering 9-12th grades. The four week sessions will cover reading, writing, speaking and thinking skills. The enrollment deadline is June 1st. There is a $25 registration fee and a $100 tuition fee that can be covered through their abundant financial assistance.   • Providence Summerbridge - This unique program allows for students with the passion to advance in education to attend classes over the summer. Classes will focus on traditional topics in the mornings and change over to more specific areas like journalism or debate in the afternoons. This is a great program to improve work habits and knowledge and to help advance you to the next educational steps.   • Upward Bound Rhode Island - Upward Bound is designed to instill in low-income, potential first-generation college students, the skills and motivation to complete high school and to enter and graduate from college. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the high school and college graduation rates of program participants. This program is available to Providence students who will be the first-generation college students in their family or be in the 9, 10, 11th grades at Hope, Mt Pleasant High and Central schools. During the summer the program is held at Rhode Island College, where students will live for the six weeks. The summer program will continue throughout the year for an additional Saturday component. SUMMER WORK

  • Summer Program Assistant - The Veazie/Sophia summer program is looking for 14-15 year old to assist with the weekly program. The assistant will not only receive invaluable experiences from working with kids, but also a $50-$100 stipend a week. Please e-mail Angell for more information at angellbaby731@hotmail.com.


  • 2006 We-Can-2 Summer Youth Employment Program - This summer program for 14-15 will be focusing on career awareness, job readiness skills training, and work projects to prepare youth for future employment opportunities. ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS

Providence After School Alliance- This organization provides youth the opportunity to experience unique programs in the summer. Read below, check out more on their website www.mypasa.org or contact Ms. Cabral for the Youth Opportunities Guide. These are just some of the programs you might be interested in are:

  • New Urban Arts - Explore visual, performing, and literary arts through this free program. The studio is fully equipped with a professional gallery, darkroom, silkscreen production, video editing, sewing and more. (401) 751-4556.


  • Arts Programming at the Black Rep - The Black Rep uses African arts to enable students to develop as artists and leaders, embracing art, history, and culture.   • Groundwork Summer Green Team - This offers summer employment for youth ages 14-18 to work outdoors improving Providence neighborhoods for 7 weeks in the summer. Applications and interviews are required. Contact Heather Gaydos at gwp@groundworkprovidence.org or (401) 351-6440.


  • Media Hedz Summer Camp - Join this Progreso Latino summer camp to learn more about videography, making the video, cooking, and arts. There are a total of 6 field trips with two overnight activities, swimming, organized sports, and community service projects. It is for all ages up to 12th grade.   • Youth In Action - YIA is at the forefront of youth leadership and is located at 672 Broad Street. Youth are trained and have educated over 9,400 youth about HIV/pregnancy prevention, street outreach, violence prevention and arts activities.
