Art Programs
At Sophia, art embodies all that is creative and girls are given full rein to experiment without limits. Art teacher, Elizabeth Kearns and Music teacher, Kim Trusty give Sophia girls a broad education of both historical and contemporary artistic practices. From song writing and c.d. design to designing functional items for our school, Sophia girls are creating artwork that extends beyond the traditional standard.

Adastra
Adastra, an award winning, student–taught
program sponsored by Johnson & Wales University’s
Travel and Tourism Department, marries tourism with ecology.
Adastra enables Sophia girls to explore the culture, history
and attractions of the countries J&W students themselves
visit as part of their college curriculum.
Field trips play
a critical role in this hands-on elective— bringing Sophia
students to such places as Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth,
Massachusetts, the Worcester Ecotarium, as well as many
other historic and ecological sites. |

Health Programs
From dental hygiene to yoga and everything in between, Janine Musto, our physical education and nutrition specialist provides Sophia girls with a broad understanding of their bodies: mind, body and spirit. School counselor, Gisele Polanco creates a safe and comfortable haven for girls to share feelings and provides comprehensive support critical to the emotional and social issues, relevant to girls and their families. |

Earth Charter Program
Fifth and sixth grade students are learning to make the connection between the earth and themselves through the unique Earth Charter program.
This program not only convinced the girls that worms are
"cool", but exposed them to global connectedness through the
intimacy of a lowly creature’s life cycle. |
 |
Career Day/Mentoring Programs
Sophia’s newest program, Career/Mentoring matches career interests of our sixth, seventh and eighth graders with professional women. These mentors will be the link between the student and Sophia Academy, and their individual high school. |

Community Service
From preparing holiday gift bags for McAuley House, to collecting
coats for the State House Coat Drive, working in St. Edward’s
Food Pantry, volunteering for Green Peace clean-up, to fundraising
for Sophia Academy, Sophia girls give back to the community. |
 |
After School Programs
Sophia’s after school program, via the North End Community Learning Collaborative, offers girls a safe and enlightening sanctuary. Whether they choose to tackle the fine art of conflict resolution in a specialized workshop, “hunker down” in the homework club, burn off some steam shooting hoops on the basketball team or expand their creativity in a variety of fine art classes, Sophia girls make out-of-school time productive time. |

Library Sciences
Sophia Academy’s library is now fully catalogued and computerized thanks to our volunteer, retired librarian Pam Rinaldi. In addition to setting up and maintaining our library, Pam teaches the students how to best utilize library resources and to grow in appreciation of good literature.
The bi-weekly classes cover the use of reference books such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, and atlases as well as an understanding of the Dewey Decimal system. Students are also encouraged to borrow from the collection of fiction and non-fiction books.
The vast majority of age-appropriate books have been donated by friends of Sophia Academy. Our current need is for curriculum-centered books, videos and DVD’s.
